Warrior Prayer

In case you have not noticed, we’ve been dropped into the middle of a war.

I bring it up because a lot of people don’t notice…and that’s the problem.  When bad things happen they assume it is random chance, or Murphy’s Law.  Or God, if they are of certain spiritual upbringing or bitter about God.

The Problem of Suffering is not something that I can cover in full detail here, but my point is that they are missing a big part of the story.  They have lined up the usual suspects and left out the main culprit.  To be direct, they have skipped over a key concept from the Bible: we are at war.  They forget that this is how the story begins, and how it ends.  They forget that we are surrounded by invisible warriors fighting for us and against us.  They assume we are on a cruise ship, not a battle ship.  (More on this another day.)

Slightly Different Mindset

Examples:

  • Adam was taken out, because he was not alert.  (Here)
  • Elisha knew that he had backup from the most powerful army in the universe.  (Here
  • Daniel prayed for 3 weeks straight while an angel battled it out in the invisible realm.  (Here
  • Silent Night had a cosmic sci-fi battle raging behind the scenes. (Here

Explanation:

  • Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men be strong. (1 Corinthians 16:13)
  • Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving (Colossians 4:2)
  • Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8)
  • …so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober. (1 Thessalonians 5:6)
  • Then the dragon was enraged at the woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus. (Revelation 12:17)

Fine Speech, Now What Do We Do?

Staying in this hyper-vigilant state while we go through every mundane day is a big challenge.  One small step I’ve taken to stay alert is the Warrior Prayer.  I am not Catholic, but I like the idea of making the symbol of the cross to remind myself to be alert.  At the hospital where I work there is a chapel, and every time I walk past it I try to remember to cross myself 3 times as I say this prayer:

  1. “I pray in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.”  (while crossing myself in the conventional way)
  2. “Protect my mind, my mouth, my ears and eyes.”  (while pointing to my forehead, mouth, left and right cheek)
  3. “Thank you for the helmet of salvation, belt of truth, and good news.”  (While drawing a dotted line over my heart from high, to medium, to low)
  4. “Thank you for the shield of faith, breastplate of righteousness, and sword of the spirit.”  (While pointing to the left side of my heart, middle, and right side of my heart.)
  5. “Purify me for battle, Lord, my King.  I want to be alert and ready.”  (clenched fist, as if holding the Sword)

This may be cheesy, and maybe it is silly, but it helps me to remember that I am facing a lot more than deadlines and paperwork…I’m in a spiritual war zone.  You should do whatever it takes to remind yourself of the same.  It may look different than that for you, but figure something out that you can do consistently to keep Reality in mind.  Because the “physical world creates a spiritual haze,” and we didn’t get all dressed up in the armor of God for nothing!

As I’ve described, we are in a war.  The devil is trying to take you out, and he’s coming for your health, your kids, your focus, your peace.   Don’t worry – every suburb and tribe and nation will be rocked at the end of this story, when the One Tough Dude comes and finishes this battle once and for all.  https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Revelation%2019&version=NIV But until then, it’s up to us.  Are you ready?  Are you alert, today?

Other Scriptures:

  • “Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears.  (Acts 20:31)
  • Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men be strong.  (1 Corinthians 16:13)
  • Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;  (Colossians 4:2)
  • Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. (1 Peter 5:8)
  • so then let us not sleep as others do, but let us be alert and sober.  (1 Thessalonians 5:6)

Longer Version of the Warrior Prayer:

  1. I pray in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  2. You have saved me for a purpose.  Saved me with your blood.
  3. I have made a covenant to focus my eyes on You.  On the eternal.
  4. Your salvation protects my mind, because I am yours.  Permanently.
  5. Christ’s righteousness is my body armor.
  6. I believe Your truth.  Your truth holds me together and it has set me free.
  7. I am not ashamed of your gospel, the good news.
  8. My faith is a shield that can withstand any attack.
  9. Your Word, empowered by Your Spirit, lets me fight back in victory.
  10. Purify me for battle, my Lord, my King.
  11. Help me to love You and to love people.
  12. In the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
