The Armor of God: The Belt of Truth

ArmorOfGod

This is by far my favorite piece of the armor and I think the most important piece. Let me explain. Satan’s main way that he attacks us is through lies.

John 8:44 “…He (the devil) was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.”

That is how he takes us out. He plants some seed of doubt or disbelief about God or ourselves, and continues with the same lie until it is part of our own beliefs. Today we learn about a piece of armor that will save us from Satan’s main tactic and will help us use the other pieces to their full potential.

The Roman soldier’s belt was one of the most important pieces of armor. It literally held most of the other pieces in place. The breastplate tucked into the belt, keeping it in place. There was a loop on the belt that held the sword, and a place for the shield to rest which helped the soldiers to carry such a heavy piece of armor. If the belt was not put on or was not put on correctly then those other three pieces would not function properly. If these four pieces of armor were not in their proper place, it would cause the soldier to be unable to walk, run or fight in the heat of battle. Everything was dependent on the placement of the belt.

So what is the belt of truth?  The place where we can find ultimate truth is the written Word of God.

Psalm 33:4 NLT “For the Word of The Lord holds true, and we can trust everything that he does.”

Proverbs 30:5 NLT “Every word of God proves true. He is a shield to all who come to him for protection.”

2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.

Truth has to be our foundation. If we do not fight our battles standing on truth, then we will fail every time.

Here are scriptures to back up the fact that the belt, the written Word of God, is what allows us to use all the other pieces properly.

Truth Supports the Breastplate of Righteousness

Righteousness means to be made right with God. If we do not know what the Word of God says about who we are in Christ, we will doubt our salvation each time that we sin and mess up.

Romans 1:16-17 (NLT) For I am not ashamed for this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes-the Jew first and also the Gentile. This Good News tells us how God makes us right in his sight. This is accomplished from start to finish by faith. As the Scriptures say, “It is through faith that a righteous person has life.”

Romans 10:9-11, 13 (NLT) If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by confessing with your mouth that you are saved. As the Scriptures tell us, ‘anyone who trusts in him will never be disgraced.’ For everyone who calls on the name of The Lord will be saved.

Hebrews 5:12-13 (NIV) In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of Gods word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.

Truth Supports the Shoes of the Gospel of Peace

Peace is easily taken from us as soon as trials hit. It is one of the first things that goes when we start believing the devil’s lies. That is why it is so important that we understand Biblical truth in all situations. This way we can keep our emotions under control and at peace.

The Words that Jesus has spoken to us are found in the Bible.

John 16:33 (NASB) These things I (Jesus) have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.

Philippians 4:6-9 (NLT) Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need and thank him for all he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus. And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. Keep putting into practice all you learned and received from me- everything you heard from me and saw me doing. Then the God of peace will be with you.

Truth Supports the Shield of Faith

This scripture makes it perfectly clear how to get faith.

Romans 10:17 (NIV) Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

Truth Supports the Helmet of Salvation

Without the belt of truth we would have no knowledge of how to be saved.

2 Timothy 3:15 (NLT) you have been taught the holy Scriptures from childhood, and they have given you the wisdom to receive the salvation that comes by trusting in Christ Jesus.

1 Peter 1:23-25 (NLT) For you have been born again, but not to a life that will quickly end. Your new life will last forever because it comes from the eternal, living Word of God. As the Scriptures say, ‘People are like grass; their beauty is like a flower in the field. The grass withers and the flowers fades. But the Word of The Lord remains forever.’ And that word is the Good News that was preached to you.

Ephesians 1:13 (NLT) And now you Gentiles have also heard the truth, the Good News that God saves you. And when you believed in Christ, He identified you as his own by giving you the Holy Spirit, whom he promised long ago.

Truth Is the Sword of the Spirit

Without the written Word of God there would be no Sword of the Spirit.

For the Word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edge sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our inner most thoughts and desires.

As you can see, the truth found in the Word of God is tied into all of the other pieces of armor. So what should we do now? We should get the Word of God in us! If we do not do that, we will not be able to use the rest of the armor. And knowing the Word of God will make you successful.

Joshua 1:8 Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

The Bible, scripture, God’s Word is the most important piece of the armor. It is the foundation for Christian living. It helps us to walk with confidence and boldness as we face our enemy head on. Scripture changes our way of thinking, it aligns us with God’s perspective on everything.

  • So when you are facing fear, what Scripture are you going to stand on?
  • When you are facing a big decision, what Scripture are you going to stand on?
  • When you doubt your ability to succeed, what Scripture are you going to stand on?
  • When you are facing a temptation, what Scripture are you going to stand on?
  • When you are offended by someone, what Scripture are you going to stand on?
  • When you are facing sickness, what Scripture are you going to stand on?

Do you see the pattern? The next time you or your child faces a situation or problem, find a Scripture to stand on and watch as God fights your battles with you. No matter what you are facing, the Bible has the answer. Seek it out, search for it until you find it. Then Stand, and stand firm!

Jeremiah 29:11-14 (NIV) For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord,

Matthew 7:7-8 (NASB) Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.

John 8:31-32 (NIV)  To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples.  Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
