It Is Not About What You Do!

Okay, so I might be a little obsessed with Mercy Me’s new album, “Welcome to the New.” I just have to share one more of their songs and then I will be done, for awhile.

The following words are from the song “Wishful Thinking” by Mercy Me.

Could it be that on my worst day

How You love me simply will not change?

What if its really not about

What I do but what you did, oh what if….?

These words reminded me of the love chapter, 1 Corinthians 13. We always correlate this chapter with marriage because it is read at many weddings as people start their lives together. But did you ever think about the fact that these traits of love are based off of God’s character?  After all, God Is Love!

Do you believe that 1 Corinthians 13 is talking about the love God has for YOU? Do you believe that no matter what you do, God’s love will not change? Do you trust that He will be patient with you when you lose your temper once again? Do you believe that He is not keeping a record of all the times when you spoke rudely to your child or spouse? Do you trust that He wants to protect you and doesn’t delight when evil comes your way? Don’t forget!  He loves you and only wants what is best for you. He hopes that you will go to Him for help. He will not give up on you, ever! He will persevere in pursing your heart!!!

He sent His son to die for us so that we will never be without Him. We are cleansed, made whole through the blood of His son. Do you believe that you are redeemed, righteous, holy??? We are, believe me we are!! What Christ did on the cross is enough to cover anything and everything. Allow Christ to take that sin, those feelings of condemnation and guilt from you. Come boldly to the throne of Grace, the throne of undeserved grace, the grace that He will so willingly and freely give to us. It is okay that we mess up. It is okay that we made the same mistake again today. It doesn’t matter what you did, all that matters is what Christ did! Allow the sacrifice of the cross to be enough. Allow what Christ did on the cross to wash you clean and give you a fresh start. Remember that His mercies are new every morning. Did you hear that?? Every morning!! We can start each day afresh. As Bart the lead singer of Mercy Me said as he talked about this song, “Rest in the power of the cross. Stop trying to do enough and start trusting Him instead.” We can start each day in His presence. Remind yourself that His Spirit will NEVER leave us nor forsake us. He is ALWAYS there.

So in those low moments of defeat, focus on the one who has given you everything that you need. No matter what you have done and no matter how many times you have done it, He is right there, wanting desperately to love you unconditionally. Let Him in!! Ask for forgiveness which is so freely gives. Ask God to give you the wisdom and strength to change, to become more like Him. He can help you leave those past ways behind you and move into a new way of living, of thinking and of doing. Once you have experienced this forgiving love, you will be able to love your children and spouse in the same unconditional love. You will be able to overlook the mistakes they make, the pain that they cause and the frustration that wants to find a place. You will be able to overcome because of the daily power of the cross.

Spend today with your Lord. Ask for forgiveness for those things that cloud your mind. Allow Him to wipe the slate clean. Then spend time in His Word, seeking truth and wisdom to change your ways. Then pray and build yourself up so that you can conquer the day!

The God of all the universe loves YOU with a perfect love.  To again quote the song, it isn’t wishful thinking…that’s just how it is!

We want to hear from you!
