Last week we talked about the most important piece of armor we can possess: the Belt of Truth. We pointed out that our source of that Truth is the Word of God. It is our job as parents to make sure that this belt is firmly in place for our kids, for life. Today we thought we would share some Scriptures that can help us do just that.
As I was gathering these scriptures all into one document these two specific ones came to mind.
All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17
“And you must love The Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your strength. And you must commit yourselves wholeheartedly to these commands that I am giving you today. Repeat them again and again to your children. Talk about them when you are at home and when you are on the road; when you are going to bed and when you are getting up.” Deuteronomy 6:5-7
Scripture is a gift given to us to equip us to do everything we need to do and are called to do. What better gift can we give our children, than to devote time frequently to getting the Word into their hearts? It is one thing to memorize scripture, but to explain it and show them how to apply it to their lives is a priceless investment.
In a perfect world, our children would learn what the scripture says, do it willingly and have a trouble-free, worry-free, wonderful life. Unfortunately, no matter how hard you try or how much you do, your children will at some point mess up. (Just like you and I still do.) However, I pray that when my children find themselves in a tough spot, they will have the Word so ingrained into their hearts, soul and mind that they will turn to God each and every time. I pray that they would allow God to minister to them and show them what steps to take. I pray that no matter how dark it may seem that they will know the promises of God are true, that God is faithful, and that He will provide all that they need if they just turn back to Him.
Until the day that I die I will be praying that my children will not have hard times and that their lives will be full of joy and blessings. But I will pray even harder that they KNOW the Word and that the Word is ALIVE and ACTIVE in their lives. We want their faith in God to be strong and move mountains wherever they go.
Seek God, ask Him to show you what truths your children need to know in the stage of life they are in. Get in the habit of showing your kids how to find scriptures when they are struggling with a certain issue or problem. Use your dining room table as a place for discussion and discipleship. Post scriptures throughout your house so that it becomes a part of your everyday lives.
I’m sure many of you are already doing this in your house. I want to encourage you to continue – you are planting seeds in your children’s lives that will one day flourish to greatness.
Here is our list of scriptures. There are many more that could be added but it is a start:
