Conquest of Self: The Real Enemy Is Defeated

The journey is not complete, but the ending is known.

As we wrap up our Hebrews study, I pray you were challenged and encouraged as you allowed God to stretch you and face the things in your life that seemed impossible to overcome at the beginning. There is so much more to learn in the twelfth chapter of Hebrews, but I am going to let you explore the rest with God.

There are three last points that I want to make before we move on. With each point I have included some scriptures to support the points. I have changed the words to make them a personal statement you can declare.

First, the victor has already been declared. There are many more battles and situations to be fought and won, but it is so important for us to remember the real enemy in our life is Satan and He has already been defeated. It is our job to remember that each and every time we have a new situation arise and then remind Satan of it, over and over again.

Satan has already lost!

Colossians 2:13-15

I was dead because of my sin and because my sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made me alive with Christ, for He forgave all my sins. He canceled the record of the charges against me and took it away by nailing it to the cross. In this way, he disarmed the spiritual rulers and authorities. He shamed them publicly by His victory over them on the cross.

Ephesians 1:19-23

I need to understand the incredible greatness of God’s power available to me when I believe in Him. This is the same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead and seated Him in the place of honor at God’s right hand in the heavenly realms. Now Jesus is far above any ruler or authority or power or leader or anything else- not only in this world but also in the world to come. God has put all things under the authority of Christ and has made him head over all things for the benefit of the church. And the church including me is His body, it is made full and complete by Christ, who fills all things everywhere with himself.

Philippians 2:9-11

Therefore, God elevated Christ to the place of highest honor and gave Him the name above all other names, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under earth, (including Satan) and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Hebrews 2:11-15

So now Jesus and I whom He made holy have the same Father. That is why Jesus is not ashamed to call me His sister. For he said to God, “I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters. I will praise you among your assembled people.” He also said, “I will put my trust in him.” that is “I and the children God has given me.” Because God’s children are human beings-made of flesh and blood-the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had the power of death. Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.

1 John 3:8b

But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.

Secondly, You have Christ in you. You have all of His power at your disposal and you can fight victorious.

Romans 6:7, 11-13

For when I die with Christ I am set free from the power of sin…. So I will consider myself to be dead to the power of sin but alive to God through Christ Jesus. I will not let sin control the way I live. I will not give into my sinful desires. I will not let any part of my body become an instrument of evil to serve sin. Instead I five myself completely to God, for I was dead, but now I have new life. I will use my whole body as an instrument to do what is right for the glory of God.

Romans 8:37

Even though I will face trouble, overwhelming victory is mine through Christ, who loves me.

Deuteronomy 28:1-8, 13 (paraphrased)

If I fully obey the Lord my God and carefully keep all His commands, the Lord will set me high above all nations of the world. I will experience these blessings:

My home will be blessed.

My children will be blessed.

My work will be blessed.

My possessions will be blessed.

Wherever I go and whatever I do will be blessed.

The Lord will conquer my enemies when they attack me.

The Lord will guarantee a blessing on everything that I do and I will not be in need.

I will be the head and not the tail. I will be on top and never on the bottom.

Lastly, we are at war and whether we like it or not we will be until we meet our maker in heaven. This is not to discourage you but to encourage you to get ready, to be prepared.

Ephesians 6:13, 18

Therefore, I need to put on every piece of God’s armor so that I will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle I will still be standing firm… I need to pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Staying alert and be persistent in my prayers.

Philippians 3:13-14

No, I have not already achieved what I am going for, but I focus on this one thing. Forgetting the past I will look forward to what lies ahead. I will press on to reach the end of the race and receive the heavenly prize for which God, through Christ Jesus is calling me.

Hebrews 12:1-2

Therefore since I am surrounded by a huge crowd of people who have lived this life of faith, I will take off any weight that is slowing me down, especially any sin that is hindering me. I will run with endurance the race God has set before me. I will do this successfully by keeping my eyes on Jesus.

This will not be the last time that I will have to walk myself through the different steps of Hebrews 12 but I know that with each run through I will get stronger and my faith in my Savior will grow.

Here is my prayer for you and I:

Lord help us to pull back the curtain so that we can see clearly when the devil is behind the argument, the frustration, the problem, the strife, the lies, the insecurity and the fear that is right in front of our face. Help us not to be distracted and waste our energy, time and emotion on the distractions, but help us to see the root of the problem. Help us to see that it really isn’t the person or situation that is in front of our face but that Satan is attacking. Help us to keep our eyes focused on you so that we can clearly see and hear the exact steps you are wanting us to take.

Thank you that you promise to never leave us and you will always equip us to do everything that you have called us to do. Increase our faith. Change us and mold us into who you created us to be. Thank you for loving us so much that you continue with us every step of the way. We love you. In Jesus Name, Amen

For the Lord is faithful and He will strengthen and protect me from the evil one.
