Armor of God – The Sword

no comments

I have loved digging deeper into the Armor of God! I have learned so much as I have studied the purpose of each piece of the armor.  It is amazing how each part protects me and sets me up for success in the battles of life.

Today we will talk about the Sword of the Spirit-the Word of God. Several weeks ago we learned about the belt of truth, the written Word of God and how it is THE foundation for all the rest of the pieces. Today we will learn about how to put the Word of God into action, in a way that will become an offensive weapon that will mortally wound the enemy and defeat him forever.

Deadly Innovation

The Roman army adapted and improved its swords over time. The first one that they developed was called a gladius. It had a very long blade and was very impressive, but also very heavy. So heavy in fact that the soldier had to use two hands to swing it down to smash their opponent. Quickly the soldiers realized that this was not a very effective sword to use in battle. After many tries they ended up with a sword called a machaira. It was nineteen inches long and both sides of the blade were razor sharp. The tip of the sword hooked up, which made the point even sharper.  The soldier could cut into the enemy no matter what direction they swung and with a simple little twist the tip would tear through the insides of the enemy soldier, leaving them fatally wounded on the ground. (Sorry for the graphic description! :-p)

Twice the Power

Paul referred to the Word of God as a double edged sword in Ephesians 6:17. It is also called that in Hebrews 4:12 and Revelation 1:16. I have never quite understood the depth of meaning to the word two-edged or to the power that it can unleash until I learned more about what two-mouthed is referring to.

The word two-edged is the Greek word distomos, which means two-mouthed.  If you think about it, the Word of God is also two-sided or two-mouthed.  God’s mouth spoke to men who were inspired to write His Words. So when God spoke those words He sharpened the first side of the sword. But to get the second side sharp, it needs to be spoken a second time. That is where we come in! When we use our mouth to speak those words, we can use that power in our lives and sharpen the second side of the sword.  When we speak God’s Word out loud over our problems, struggles, and fears, we are unleashing the power of a double-edge sword. This sword that has the power to fatally wound anything the enemy can throw into our path.

When we study the Word of God and meditate on it we plant that Word deep into our hearts. We give the Holy Spirit a pool of resources He can use when we face a decision. He can remind us of things we have placed into our hearts to bring us wisdom, comfort and joy. This is why it is so important to spend the time getting the Word into us. Scripture is so powerful and effective in knocking down walls, lies and temptations, but it only has power if we know it. As a pretty nightstand decoration it will be useless when the battle is on. But if it is a permanent, strong and sturdy part of your armor it will be sharpened and ready to swing at a moment’s notice. Remember, God’s Word is hanging from the Belt of Truth.  It allows you to have God’s perspective on the situation and gives you access to the resources that are available to you.

I love how Rick Renner puts it, “Ignoring the Word of God will allow old patterns of wrong thinking and bondages from our past to continue exerting authority over us. On the other hand, meditating on the Word of God releases its dividing and discerning work inside us. When we willfully take the Word of God into our lives and allow it to do its supernatural work in us, that Word acts like a divine blade, slicing right to the heart of the matter.”

Stand and Fight

When you KNOW the Word of God you can not only stay safe but also fight back. What battles are you facing today? Do you know what the Word of God says about it? If so, are you speaking the Word over your situation? I know that in the last two years I have gotten myself in the habit of asking God for a scripture to stand on when I am in a battle. I ask Him to show me what the truth is in His Word. Then I speak it over and over and over again so that not only does my mouth know what to say but my mind knows what to think and my heart knows what to feel. The Word of God is powerful; it can mortally wound anything that rises up against you. Make sure you are using this powerful weapon that is available to each and every one of us!

What is one step you can take this week to spend more time reading and understanding the Word of God?
