Truth Versus Lies

TruthVsLies

Before our Valentine’s posts I was sharing what I have been learning about winning battles instead of being taken over by them. The more I search Scripture, the more I realize that there is a common root for almost all of the battles:  Lies.

The saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is right. Satan really hasn’t learned any new tricks. Since the garden, he has tried to take us out by planting lies. John 8:44 tells us that “He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.” (NLT)

There are four steps we take to let lies in and allow them to slowly but surely take us out. First we entertain them, we listen to them. Next we allow our minds to think about them. Thinking easily turns into believing. Once we start believing the lies, they will change how we act, how we respond to those around us and how we see the situations that we face. We can change one of the steps in this pattern, but if we do not go all the way back to the root of the lie, the initial lie, then we are just patching the situation.

It is so important to realize that we are always in a battle and so we need to learn how to equip ourselves to fight victoriously. The scripture that comes to mind is Ephesians 6:10-18. As I was studying this, I thought it was interesting that the first thing that God tells us to do it to gird our loins with truth. If you think about it, the loins are the most vulnerable part of a man’s body. If you hit them in that area, they are almost incapable of doing, well anything, even the simple task of walking. God tells us to protect that most sensitive area with a belt of TRUTH. Why is that? Satan’s main tactic is to plant a lie and to try to make us incapable of doing anything!!

It reminds me of this feisty bush/tree thing we had in our backyard. When we moved into our house we did a little landscaping in our backyard. There was this bush/tree-like plant that was pretty but it had thorns in it that we wanted to remove. Nate dug it up and removed it but unbeknownst to us the roots of the plant went much deeper than our shovel. Later we started to notice little tiny shoots popping up throughout our yard. Now, our backyard’s grass isn’t a golf course, but we did start to notice the hard, pokey stick-like stems coming up as we ran across barefoot. Laziness led us to just pull them up by hand or cutting them at ground level. This worked for a couple of days but they quickly came right back up causing havoc on our bare feet. After awhile we were shocked to see a few shoots by our garden which was on the other side of our yard from the original bush. Much to our amazement we had little shoots literally throughout our entire backyard. We realized we weren’t dealing with an annoying little bush anymore. We had a huge problem in hand that needed to be dealt with correctly before it took over everything. Thankfully we had tree work done around that time and was educated on the proper way to kill the roots of this prolific beast. With each spray more and more roots died. It took at least three rounds to finally get deep enough into the root system to ward off any more new growth. We even had to reapply the spray to a couple areas the following year to complete the battle. If only we had fully realized what we were up against in the beginning, we could have saved our feet from the painstaking steps of eliminating it for good.

This is a great picture of what lies can do in our own lives. Lies can disguise themselves as pretty little bushes hiding the nasty thorns inside. If we don’t take care of it in the beginning, it can start to spread. Once we notice that it is a problem we need to spring into action. If we are not diligent to take care of the problem all the way to it’s core, it will become so large that it will seem impossible to ever get rid of. Then it can slowly but surely become a part of us, changing how we act, think and live. But this does not have to happen. We have the most powerful chemical killing power at our fingertips. It is the Word of God and it chock-full of TRUTH and LIFE. It is able to reveal and battle against any lie that you may be facing if you just pick it up and use it.

So this week ask God to reveal the lies that you have been believing. Have Him show you the ones that are obvious and the ones that are so hidden within that they have become a part of you. Then diligently find the Scriptures that can lead you to the truth. Gird your loins!! It is one of the best steps you can take to overcome anything that you may be facing!!
