The 4 Layers of Pentecost

Every time that we learn about Jewish holidays we are struck by the many layers of meaning.  It seems that no matter how much we learn, there is always another avenue to explore.  About 50 days ago I wrote about the bridge between Passover and Pentecost (aka Shavuot), and today I will just introduce the layers of meaning for this incredibly important holiday.

Layer 1:  The first produce from the wheat harvest.  (God provides physical needs.)

Layer 2: God gives Moses the Law on Mount Sinai.  (God provides spiritual needs.)

Layer 3:  God gives the Holy Spirit.  (God’ Spirit provides even more abundantly.)

Layer 4: God will give us our Heavenly home.  (God’s perfect provision, forever!)

Another way to say it:
God provides the food that you need to survive.  But remember, we do not live on bread alone, but on every Word that comes from God.  Those words were written on stone for Moses, but they are now written on our hearts because of the Spirit inside us.  And one day this will all be perfected as we are harvested like wheat and taken to Heaven to live in God’s perfect home!

Spend some time this week reflecting on the many ways that God supplies everything that you need.  If you are interested in more information, there are a lot of great links below.

Leviticus 23:15-16

“‘From the day after the Sabbath, the day you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, count off seven full weeks. Count off fifty days up to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and then present an offering of new grain to the Lord.

Deuteronomy16:9-10

Count off seven weeks from the time you begin to put the sickle to the standing grain.  Then celebrate the Festival of Weeks to the Lord your God by giving a freewill offering in proportion to the blessings the Lord your God has given you.

Exodus 24:7

Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, “We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.”
