What do you get the kid who has everything? I’m so glad you asked!
Christmas is just around the corner – only 52 days to go! Every year our kids get a lot of fun games and toys and clothes and other stuff. It’s a wonderful time of the year, full of generosity and joy. But we also take this opportunity to be purposeful about some of the gifts that they receive. We want some of the gifts to be an investment in their future, in one way or another. We spend quite a bit of time finding these items, and then either buy them for the kids or put them on the kids’ lists to give to grandparents and relatives.
For the next few Fridays we are going to give you some reviews of gifts that we think should be considered for every Christmas list. This week is one of my personal favorites: Buck Denver!
Phil Vischer, of Veggie Tales fame, has created a new series called What’s In The Bible With Buck Denver. Here is his video summary of the project:
We spend a lot of time traveling to Iowa and Illinois, and so I get to listen to these DVDs while the kids watch them. They are very informative, and I think they are very funny. A lot of the humor is over the head of our just-turned-4-year-old, and it is definitely geared more towards Kindergarten and up. Judging from our family, I would say that it is enjoyed by kids from age 6 to 33. If you are a nerdy family of 6, I virtually GUARANTEE that you will love it.
We have watched Volume 1 (Genesis) through Volume 9 (OT Prophets), and we love them all! We are very excited to start watching the New Testament editions, which are Volumes 10-13.
Even if you aren’t interested in getting the DVDs, or if you have them already, I strongly suggest that you spend some time perusing his website: http://whatsinthebible.com/
They have a lot of free resources on the site…everything from videos to crafts to daily emails to coloring pages. They have activity guides for family discussions: http://whatsinthebible.com/topic/activity-types/family-activities/ There is enough here to keep you busy and learning for a long time!
I have been impressed with their steady stream of good content, and with their resources that go along with the liturgical calendar and holidays. Here is a nice blog post about Halloween: http://whatsinthebible.com/halloween-meaning-history-christianity/ Also, if you are in Children’s Ministry in your church and have $800, you should definitely review the Curriculum series. There are about 40 DVDs with it, and I’m sure that it is very good.
Summary of What’s In The Bible:
- Target Ages: 6-33
- Strengths: Very informative. Goofy. Summarizes the entire Bible and highlights the big themes.
- Weaknesses: Some people don’t think goofy is funny.
- Caveats: We’ve only watched the OT ones.
Do you have kids you are buying for? Your own children or grandchildren, or other relatives? They would also be good gifts for neighbors or friends who are interested in learning more about the Bible. We have also given the DVDs away as prizes at neighborhood outreaches. This is a gift that can really change someone’s life!
To conclude, this entertainment truly teaches good lessons and gets you and your kids thinking about the most important book of all. Our Purposeful Life recommends it, with a full 12 thumbs up!
